May Newsletter (an exerpt)
Out on a run one beautiful summer morning back in my jogging days, I slowed to let an older man catch up. We began talking about fitness and running and one of the things that came up was this: why is it that, sometimes a workout can be almost effortless, and sometimes, it can be so darn hard.
We both suggested various reasons for this such as nutrition, rest, hydration, the beers we had the previous night, and so on. And somewhere, in all that conversation, my new jogging friend gave me this: "We need to push ourselves through the tough workouts, to make the good workouts better."
He was right. On several levels.
On one level, the physical… pushing the body harder than it wants to go, we improve ourselves by forcing our systems to find the resources it needs to continue. On another level, the mental… our drive to continue when we want to quit, develops character.
Tough workouts test us. They separate the men and women from the boys and girls. We can finish what we set out to do, or take the easy way out and quit and in defeat.
And Remember:
Though my writings come from sound, fact based information. Some of my suggestions may not be appropriate for you as an individual because of your personal health situation. If you feel the need for information designed specifically for you, it is your responsibility to seek advice from your health or fitness professional.

Exercises
Unconventional use of Heavy Bags
The following shows how I use a heavy bag to change ordinary exercises into more core-demanding movements.
There are two bags we can use at Lifetime Fitness. Both are owned by David Cialini.
The black bag weighs 75 pounds and the blue weighs 38 lbs.
The Walking Lunge
Carry the bag by hugging, over the head, or "cave-man" style (on the shoulder)
Other Exercises:
The Pickup and Carry
The Shoulder Press
Q and A
Last month I asked this question of you:
"If you could buy a pill that would keep you gym-fit with no exercise at all, would you take it?
This pill would cost the same as an annual membership to a good gym, and you would need to take one pill every year. "
Answers:
One said she would take the pill to free up time for other things such as time with family.
Another said he would not take the pill because he enjoys doing exercisie and not just the benefits of the exercise.
A third said he would take the pill, but would continue to exercise so that he would become even more fit.
Interesting…
Tom
